EU Allocates €35 Million in Humanitarian Aid to Combat Food Insecurity in West Africa

Brussels, August 26, 2024 – The European Union has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing food insecurity in West Africa by announcing the release of an additional €35 million in humanitarian aid. This latest funding brings the EU's total humanitarian assistance to the region to €160.6 million for 2024. The funds aim to alleviate the severe food insecurity exacerbated by ongoing political instability and insecurity in the region.

The €35 million will be distributed among several countries, ensuring each area's needs are met. The allocation breakdown is as follows:

  • Burkina Faso: €10 million

  • Mali: €8 million

  • Niger: €8 million

  • Mauritania: €1 million

  • Nigeria: €5 million

  • Gulf of Guinea coastal countries: €3 million

These funds will be channeled through humanitarian partners actively working on the ground, providing critical support to those affected by the crises. The EU's continued financial commitment highlights its dedication to aiding West African nations facing significant challenges due to political unrest and security issues.
